Morning Tide

After listening to my feedback it was clear that I had to grab the audience attention and keep them interested. The piece starts off with 3 different elements, which create the foundation of my piece, the alarm clock acts as the ride, the bottle n spoon, the snare and the cupboard acts the bass drum. In my research i found out that most beats consist of these components. To keep the audience interested I kept on introducing new sounds every 2 bars.

After gathering the sounds that I needed it was just a matter of arranging them to create an energetic and exciting piece. At this stage I started to find effect that enhanced the sounds and the piece really came together. Although only a 2 minutes long the piece really started to come together.

More Recordings

After the feedback we decided to completely start again, still keep this idea of morning sounds and beats but start again with a blank canvas.  We started by rerecording all the sounds again.

List of recordings
Alarm clock
Cupboard door
Spoon
Toilet
Slurping drink
Tea bag
Cereal
Milk
Boiling kettle
Brushing teeth
Zip on a bag
Squeaking door
Rustling of bed sheets
Phone
People speaking
Spoon hitting teacup
Radio sounds

We might not use all of the sounds but we decided to gather as many as possible

Equipment

As we had more tutorials we where allowed to book out more microphones which would give us a wide verity of sounds

Condenser Microphone
 Dynamic Microphone
 Zoom
 Hydro microphone

Shotgun microphone

Feedback

Feedback

Today was the day we had to present our piece to the class and I'm not going to lie i was very nervous but also disappointed in what we i had create. However i was quite interested to hear what other thought of our piece, i was more interested to hear what people thought of the concept and not the actual piece.

Our sound piece was a very rough edit and we didn't have all the sounds we needed to full complete the piece. I was often left to crack on with the edit as my partner didn't know the software and felt his time could be better spent else where. I can understand this as it was my idea and coming from a music background he felt like he wouldn't be very helpful as he is much more focused on the visual side of the piece. At times it would have been useful just to have someone else listen to the piece and give some feedback thats why this session was so helpful.

My original idea was to go straight into the beat like you hear in most sounds, but i felt i had to establish the sounds or i would lose the concept of morning sounds. On reflection I was very disappointed in what i had produced, although the concept was strong the execution was quite poor.

In our pairs we where asked to write feedback about each overs work with we would then give to the group at the end of the presentation. The feedback we received in our tutorial was quite positive and much better then what imagined it to be. Everyone seemed to really like the concept and idea but didn't like the start as it too long and was quite boring. another we where we got told to improve our piece was to have more sounds, more mooring sounds which build up to create a sense of atmosphere and sense of place.

On refection to the feedback and presentation it was clear that we had to start again but keep the concept and idea.

Assessment Piece

Our first assessment is tomorrow and I'm a little bit nervous as I'm really don't think my our piece is strong enough or good enough to present. The assessment day has come around very quickly and where a little under prepared. I have pretty spent most if today in the edit room and only managed to produce a pice of work lasting just over a minute when our piece is surpassed to last 3. The piece i will be showing will be a showcase of my ability on Pro Tools and not what i wanted to create.

Mind Map Experimental Film

Two weeks ago we had a tutorial with our seminar tutor to talk about a couple of ideas we had for our  experimental film project. we both had a clear of idea of what we wanted the film to look like i was attacking the film in quite a formal way by using different panels to represent what was been heard. E.G sound of alarm clock would be shown with an image of a clock, while my partner want to try something quite abstract have a video while evolved around this drum kit, we would have extreme close of this kit followed by long sweeping pans on the country side  juxtapositioning two ideas.

All though i really like oscars i did we both agreed that go with my idea of having different panels to represent the sound but we also came up with ways in which to improve the idea, instead of the visuals been very literal but to use extreme close ups and slow zooms to slight confuse the audience. also at the top would be a time lapse of sheffield.

Experimental Film Research

Experimental film research

After looking at the reading we was given in class we where told to analyse one of the experimental film.  I chose Star Guitar by the Chemical Brothers directed by Michael Gondry in 2002. I’m a big fan of the chemical brothers and very aware of the video but I had never analysed it from a filmmaker’s point of view, as I was trying to create a piece of music it only seemed right to study this experimental film.

The video is about a train journey as it passes a number of different landmarks the camera on the back on a train. After watching this piece I was amazed at how seamlessly the whole piece flowed, the transition between one location to another was incredible.

Another aspect of this video I like was the way the film was edited the director used transitions of tunnels and other trains passing to help the change the location of the piece.

I also did some more research and came across one of the films we where shown at the stat of the semester Tango (Director: Zbigniew Rybczynski, Poland, 1981) this piece shows a boy getting a ball from a house and repeats this video over and over again as other people enter the room.

What I like about this film is that each individual are in a separate time as non of the people interact with each over and but share the same space I found this aspect very interesting. As more and more people entered the room I got quite hard to follow and found myself quite confused and wasn’t totally sure what I was suppose to gain from the experience apart from confusion

Then I started to think about my own piece of work as piece is all about layers of sounds and how they build up to create a piece of music, much like this piece of experimental film.

First editing- Pro Tool

First Editing

After recoding variety of sounds i uploaded them to Pro Tools i wanted to keep the sound very pure so haven't used any effects. Im trying to focus my work around this idea of music and that everyday objects have rhythm.

I didn't find this process easy as it was my first time using Pro Tools, i found it very difficult to replicate the beat in my head using the software. Even the simplest things to do i found very difficult and found it hard switching from Soundtrack to Pro Tools. Although we where given the option to use Soundtrack i opted to use Pro Tools as it would be the software we would use throughout university so i thought i would use the time now to get used to it.

The beat i created was a very simple and only had two layers, the top layer was the alarm clock, which acts like a metronome and the door closing acts as the bass drum.
