Liverpool Day 2

On day two we stuck to our original plan of splitting up into two groups. Early this morning I recevived a text of the people who knew Tomo who told us to go to a place called Dunnet Street where Tomo has done a lot of work, we felt that this would have been a nice contrast when editing as we could cut away to the work of Tomo.

On route to Dunnet Street we walked through the docks we had a decent amount of footage. However we where soon stopped by security as you had to get permission to film certain parts of the docks so that footage was useless although we did managed to get a couple of really nice shots that we where allowed to use.  What we didn’t realise about Dunnet street was that it was over a two hour walk. When we got they I think we where both expecting the holy grail of graffiti, wall after wall covered in graffiti. However when we got there we found only two-pieces of street art. At this point I was little annoyed as we had wasted half the day walking with all the equipment to find two average bits of graffiti. However we made the best of a bad situation, we set up the tracks and got some very nice footage, on the way back we spotted little bits of graffiti which we decided to film.

Despite not wanting to do a six man interview we decided to stick together for the Tristan and Tomo interview, to help set up efficiently and to help carry all the equipment.

Tristan interview went really well, he was very confident and what he where saying was great, at this point I started get a rough idea of how I wanted the sound-to-sound like well the opening minute or so, where I wanted to use part of the interviews to help set up the narrative while overlaid over a sound track which I would create.  Tristan said a lot of useful stuff about street art talking about the future and the difficulties they had faced.

After Tristan interview we where all quite unsure if the Tomo interview was going to happen as we hadn’t heard anything off him or his friends over the course of the day. How after telling Tristan about Tomo we where surprised to find out that they knew each other and started telling us about the close community hey have in the street art world.  We soon got a text saying that he was up for an interview but nothing more.

Once we got to Tomo interview he was still doing work and told us that we weren’t allowed to film. I felt a little uncomfortable at first, as he was such a guarded character. After a while we finally got an interview out of him. He’s friend told us about how privilege we where to get an interview out of him ashe wants as little media attention as possible.

The day had been very long an tiring. Once again me and Alex listened to the sound and started to get a feel of how I wanted the music to sound.

Liverpool- Day 1

Alex sound test
Our first day in Liverpool we used as a recce, to get us familiar to our surrounding but also to gather as much footage of graffiti as possible. The night before heading to Liverpool we met up and used Google street view to find areas of graffiti we came across a street called Mann Street where a lot of our contacts had told us to head.  On our way we kept on stopping a looking up different streets to see if we could see anymore.

On the way to Mann street, me and Alex had the zoom out getting a load of different atmospheres.Once near, we decided to split up into two different groups to cover more area and to gather as much footage as possible.

Olly with the Dolly
Day one was good just get used to some of the equipment we hired like the dolly had non of us had used them before.  On location we toyed with the idea of vox plot interviews. Personal I thought I would have been a nice addition to the documentary but I was out numbered.

Me, Saul and Hannah decided to look for tis cafĂ© where we where meeting Tristian, this was very near and decided that it would be a good idea finding it before the interview. On our we stop to take a couple of pictures of this unfenced piece of graffiti art, when a women came out and asked us what we where doing. We explained what we where doing and told us that she knew the person who did it. This was great as up to now we hadn’t been able to get contact with a full time street artist. She went back inside and got of her friends who knew the artist Tomo personally. However after to speaking to Tomo on the phone it was clear that he was interested but not up for an interview as he didn’t want any one knowing his identity.

At the end of day one we all met up for a meeting. We decided to scrap the idea of a 6 man interview as it would be intimidating but also we felt that it wasn’t needed and that the another group could be out getting more footage.  Me and Saul both editors where the two who would go out and get shots of the city. Later that night we had got a text of the people who knew Tomo saying that he is up for a interview as long as we can guarantee that we kept his identity safe.

Notes

After the meeting Me and Alex sat down to analysis the sound which he had gathered. To be honest I was a little disappointed as this moment I couldn’t really see how I want the sound to sound.

Last Seminar Before Liverpool

Having Zap graffiti on board make us all feel a lot more confident about the documentary now we had two defiant interviews, kerion from Zap Graffiti and the people from Urban Canvas, a company who use chalk to create pavement art, we thought this would be a nice contrast as its a different kind of interviews.

Our seminar was all about interviews looking at how to prepare for them, how to set up but more importantly what sort of questions to ask the interviewer. We decided to have to two groups, one group focusing on the main interview, the director, main camera man, sound recordist and the producer, they role was to get the the bulk of the interview and having the correct eye line. while the other group was to get off cuts of the interview but also them group setting up. another important role we had was to stop people coming into the studio where the interviews where taking place.
The interview set up
We imagined the interview at Kerions work shop and drew a diagram to represent each role. As i had DSLR i would consecrate on getting cut aways but also a second able for the interview.

Pitches- Feedback

Today we had to pitch our two ideas to our seminar groups. Its quite interesting to see how other people interpreted the brief and the many directions the groups had taken. When it came to our turn to pitch, it was quite interesting as the group was very undecided on which idea they like best, the tutor’s seemed to be in favour of the record shop idea, while the group seemed to prefer the graffiti idea.

The tutors really seemed to like the first idea as they felt it was quite unique and spike seemed like an interesting character. However with us not been able to access the shop and now the record collection been sold it was quite hard to see what we would film and the lack of cut always could be a problem and make the film quite boring and static.

The main problem with the graffiti idea was that they had seen a lot of student videos about graffiti and said doing a documentary about peoples perceptions had been told many times. Another problem they had with the idea was how liable our contact was, which is understandable and the fact our other contacts haven’t got back in contact with us was a problem. Although they seemed to really like the visual side of the documentary and with we tweaked the potential was there.

After the pitch we all met up to decided on which idea we was going to chose, although they seemed to prefer the record shop idea, we decided to chose the graffiti as we saw a lot more potential. Instead it challenging peoples perception it was now going to be a celebration of street art and the future of the art form.

Contact with Zap Graffiti

After not having much look with emailing Kerion, and struggling to find an phone. We came across his Facebook page and contact him through there. He seems really interested but after phoning him he seems a little unreliable which is something we need to take into consideration.

Third Meeting- Contact/Treatments

In our meeting today we really started to finalise our two ideas, looking at what direction where going to take. As well as writing the two treatments our producer started to get in contact with the appropriate people.

After emailing a couple of graffiti artist we didn’t seem to have much interest and Kerion at Zap graffiti still hadn’t replied to my email.  However our producer had managed to get in contacted with the owner of the record shop and he seems to be really interested

Treatment- City Canvas

As well as putting together our Treatments we started to put together our power point for the pitch.. the powerpoint covered both ideas and explaining what where trying to achieve with the documentary.
