Dakent-Expermental Artist

Dakent is a french artist and musician who specialises in making music using everyday sounds as well as conventional instruments. I first heard of Dakent while looking at different videos on YouTube, although he was one of the last artist i looked at his work was the most inspiring.

Bangers is my favourite piece by Dakent, as all the elements just come together. The piano create a great foundation for the piece before other elements join in such as the children playing and the chime. The sound of the children is such an great peaceful sound it sort of makes you feel euphoric.  i also love the way the music captures you, you almost come immersed in the music as your not quite sure what will happen next.

Music is all about been immersed and getting lost in the sound Dakent does this perfectly. On reflection i hope to create something similar but using everyday sounds to create a piece of music but also an atmosphere.

Pre Production- Capturing Sounds

On Monday 10th November we set out to record the first sounds for our sense of space piece. Still undecided on some detail of it, so used the time to capture some recording to get used to the equipment and help us develop our idea for creating a piece of music using morning sounds.

List of recordings

Alarm clock- this would act as the metronome for our piece and is often the first sound people hear when they wake up.

Door closing- this would make be the final sound of our piece as people leave the house to go to work or school.

Frying/cooking- to me the sound of someone cooking/frying meat sounds like the snare of a drum.

Equipment
As this point we where still quite limited on what equipment we where allowed to use so we opted just to take out:

Zoom- sound recording device
Dynamic Microphone
Headphone
Spare Batteries
SD card

Isolating ideas

After sometime thinking I've come up with two strong concepts and ideas. which i will explore and  experiment.

Idea 1- Drums sampling

I have a strong passion form music and even stronger passion for the drums. I really like the idea of building up sounds to create a piece of music, instead of having the sounds of the drums i would us a technique  called sampling this is where you replace the sound of of a drum E.G snare and replace it with something different E.G someone screaming.

I started to create a spider diagram with all different sounds that sound like different parts of a drum kit. However i found it very difficult, as it was hard to find sounds that exactly sounded like the piece of the drum kit.

Idea 2- Morning Routine

In the morning everyone has a very similar routine, get out of bed, have breakfast, shower, brush teeth and so on. As everyone is still a sleep and follows the same routine each morning, people often miss out on these incredible sounds. My idea is to recreate this morning routine enhancing the sounds we might miss out on.

I really like both of these ideas and going to explore both of them in the next week before picking which at the end of the week.

Ideas for sound

I designed a spider diagram containing all my early ideas. at this moment in time i have little direction so decided to put most of my ideas on to spider diagram. i look at four key areas, atmosphere, natural, unnatural and actions as these all areas indicated a wide variety of different sounds. i then isolated these areas into different sections indicated by the orange boxes. I then thought up of different sounds and the emotions these sounds made me feel.

These is no way a finished diagram as ill keep on adding more to it as and when i come up with the ideas.
